As Rosette

I stand behind one of the pillars in the chapel, unseen by others.  I smile when I see the Princess Madeline > Our beautiful princess shall brighten up this dull and dark court. I have been here a fortnight and I have decided that Scotland is not for me. I prefer the sunshine and gaiety of my country.
In France, the men dress like the nobles they are and enjoy fine food and the beautiful ladies.
Here, it's rained nearly everyday since I have arrived. The servants are dour and sullen and not friendly at all.
The nobility here behave as boors and are unfriendly.
But, I have made my mind up that I am here while  in service to my Queen, Claude of France.  She has been the very definition of kindness and refinement .
Who was I?
A foundling left on the steps of the Church.
How lucky for me that the Queen herself saw me on the day she was to attend Mass with the people. She herself told her guards to pick me and then have me  brought to the nursery. The  Princess Madeline was only a month old and the Queen thought to have me raised as playmate and companion for the her. I have been afforded the finest education and lessons. I can read, write, play three instruments, speak five languages, and have been trained in how to run a large household > the Queen has told me that one day, she shall see me married to a good and honest man.
I grew up with the royal children as playmates. In fact, they are the siblings of my heart although I know that it not true no matter how much they are fond of me.
But for Queen Claude, I will come to this wretched land and endure these rude people.
The few English that are here are unfit to even kiss my Princess's hand. I have even had Viscount Rochford attempt to flirt with me.
To be true, he is quite handsome with his bright blue eyes. His is witty and outgoing. I could see why some women would fall for his charms.
Then, he had to ruin the image I had of him by bragging to his friend that he would have my maidenhead.
Of course, he said it in English, quite unaware that I am fluent in that coarse language.
But, I widened my eyes and acted as though I didn't understand the great insult he had given me.

I see King James and the tender way he looks at my Princess. She smiles at him but even I can see from where I stand that the smile does not reach her eyes.

As  I stand at the stairs leading into the castle, I realize that I have returned home just in time to greet King Henry and his mother.
It is imperative that I act as a buffer between my brother's wife, Anne, and the Dowager Queen ,Claude.

Anne....
I had met her, saw her, and spoke to her.
She was beautiful yet she wasn't.
True, she wore her clothes beautifully, making sure the colors enhanced her complexion.
She was charming and made sure to kiss my cheek ,calling me "sister".
When Henry saw our mother's rose, his eyes misted for a moment . He remembered.
Then, while we ate, Anne began to tell me how happy she was that James was marrying a Princess of France and how she had loved living in France.
She went on to tell me of the great balls that were held and how charming Francis was .
When I told her how I looked forward to meeting Claude, Anne's eyes grew cold.

Francis was given a poor lot ,indeed, to be married to a woman such as she," Anne had said.
Claude was a sour woman, jealous of young women who were much better suited to him. I found her a rather dull creature. Suited for nothing more than to be a broodmare . Francis deserved to be married to a woman who could match him in wit and beauty

When she spoke her words, I got the distinct impression that Anne's dislike of Claude ran much deeper.....

Now, here in Scotland , I must make sure that the two Queens do not butt heads.
Henry  would surely take Anne's side and Henry will take his mother's part.
And Scotland will be pulled into the middle of it.
I sighed.[/b]

Curtseys to all the royals including Claude as I promised was to be on my best behavior for the wedding. I didn't want to upset my new husband before our son was born.

"Looks at Henry who do I talk to about requesting the highest positioned table above everyone especially the king of France and his mother Claude? And we deserve a grander bedroom then Claude." Speaks loud enough for all to hear but still softly enough I'm not being too obvious I want all to hear. "Ten gold coins for anyone who knows what color the French queen is wearing so I can wear it first."

I am informed that the guests are here and i go over and welcome all of the monarchs to Scotland.
"Welcome all to Scotland thank you coming here"

I see lady Anne Boleyn asking around and my servant goes over to her.
"My lady Anne your request for the dinner has been granted and your chambers are ready as well." The maid says to Anne and then whispers to her.
"The queen of France is to wear Blue i believe my lady"

I incline my head to Henry, a smile plastered to my face.
"Your Grace, so very kind of you to honor my daughter's wedding to your nephew."
Henry Tudor bends over my hand.
He then turns to the creature standing next to him.
" May I present my bride, Queen Anne?"
I turn to face Anne.
I will not lie : There was something about her that made her appear more... regal. Her skin glowed healthily, her hair shone like black silk. She wore a velvet dress of the darkest green, the sleeves fashioned to hide most of her fingers.
Oh, yes,the rumored sixth finger >To be honest, I had seen years ago when she was but a girl. It wasn't really a sixth finger. It was more like a tiny mole the smallest fingernail. In truth, unless your looked closely, you wouldn't know it.
But there was something else.
Almost a glow about her.

Then she must pregnant.
I inclined my head ,ever so slightly, to Anne.
" I see that Your Grace is in good health. "

"I am in great health thank you. Henry takes great care of me." Smiles at my husband who is talking to his nephew. I then walk over to my husband and smile at his nephew before curtseying him. "I sure hope what I've heard of the bride to be is just rumors or that she can keep her legs together." Walks to my room.

"It is an honour to meet your majesty Claude and i hope that the marriage between my nephew and your daughter is a grand one".

Before the ceremony we were all escorted to our chambers and mine and Anne bedroom was very grand and spacious fit for a king and queen and we saw the look on Claude's face after hers was much smaller.

THIS is how the monarch of France is treated?
The room, while nice, was better suited for am Earl, perhaps a Duke.
And the comment Anne made about my daughter......

I shook my head.
She had not changed.
Still a hateful and arrogant vile woman.

Yet, I must be the better woman. A Queen.

I walk to my dress that is bring brushed out so that I can wear to the supper meal.
It was made of the most perfect shade of  royal blue and the softest velvet.
I wondered what color dress The Whore would wear.
I must admit that Anne's taste in fashion suited her small frame, her dark hair, and her swan-like neck.

A knock on my door and I said, "Enter".
Margaret Tudor entered my room, smiling.
"Your Majesty, " she said ." I cannot begin to tell you how pleased We are that you and the King are able to be here for the wedding. I look forward to welcoming your daughter into my family."

I lift my chin. "Indeed? I'm afraid that I had doubts of our welcome." I said coolly.

Margaret's eyes widened. " Why would you have doubts? Surely, you must know that I already love the Princess as my own. My son ...."

I held up my hand, silencing her.
"Is that why King Henry of France and his mother, the Dowager Queen, have chambers better suited for an Earl? Is that why your sister-in-law feels comfortable in insulting the virginity of my daughter? Because France is so esteemed by Scotland? " I made sure to keep my tone cool .
" I do believe that when Scotland sent ambassadors to France, they were given rooms that were usually set aside for royalty. Every comfort was provided for them."

Margaret's face reddened slightly. "I.. I will have the castle steward make better accommodations at once," she stammered.

"No, there is no need. It is a mark of true royalty to ignore when our lessors try to humiliate us . But let me assure you : I will not ignore  to any more insults to Madeline. "

"My God", Margaret thought to herself. " Henry will have to curb his wife's tongue. Scotland cannot afford to have France as an enemy."

I can see the slight panic in Margaret's face.
Good.
Let her worry about my anger.
One word from me, and Henry will not allow the marriage and everything will go back to France.
Our princess and her large dowry included.

" Am I understood?," I ask. " Madeline is a Princess of the Blood and a prize for any court in Europe. We have enjoyed a profitable friendship with Scotland but some things will not be borne."

Margaret nodded. " If you excuse me...."

Now, I smile at her .
"I look forward to seeing you at supper, Margaret."

After I left Claude's rooms, I race to find my brother.
I knocked on his chambers doors and heard him call "Enter."

I open the doors to find Henry sitting in a chair, Anne upon his lap.
"Henry," I say calmly. " I must speak to you. "

"You may speak in front of me as Henry won't keep secrets as I am his wife." Looks at Henry as I giggle. "Have you told your sister of our news?" Seeing the look on my sister-in-laws face I learn best not to argue with her so I go as I have to go find my blue gown as I packed a dress of every color.

I look at both of the young men in my chambers.
Both of them young Kings.
Yet, my soon to be son in law?
He has allowed his "aunt" to insult his allies.
This will not be borne...

I nod my head slightly.
" First, let me thank you, King James, for welcoming us into your country. Although, I must say that I was a bit.....confused when I saw the chambers that had been set aside for myself and King Henry. The rooms weren't even cleaned properly but never fear : I have set MY servants to cleaning properly. I must say that I was again confused when I saw the King of France offered a chamber that is better suited to a baron. "
I look at James with innocent eyes.
"Have we done something to insult Your Grace ? For a can think of no other reason. Unless, of course, if you allowed your uncle's wife to set orders for your castle?"
Before he could answer me, I turn from James and faced Henry.

" Do not concern yourself, Your Grace, over my accommodations. I can adapt to it ."

I smooth down the waist of my dress .
" Henry, you haven't mentioned my dress. I must thank you for having the finest designers and seamstresses make it for me. "

Henry took my hand and kissed it. " You are beautiful, Your Majesty. "

I smile at my beautiful son. " Thank you, Your Grace. "

I turn once more to face James. " May I say that my daughter is marrying a very handsome man. " I smile slightly. " I do hope that Madeline has endeared herself to you and the people of Scotland. "

I watch Anne leave the room.
It was better that I talk to Henry alone because I was certain that Anne would not like what I had to say.
As much as thought I had liked her, her comments about Madeline must cease as well as her answering for my brother.

I clasp my hands in front of me.
" Henry, " I began. " I must speak to you. I have just left the chambers of Queen Claude. Imagine my surprise when I saw that she was given chambers better suited to some of a lower stature. I was even more surprised when I was told that the rooms I ordered set aside for her and King Francis were overruled by Queen Anne.
Queen Claude also heard the comment that Anne made in regards to the purity of Princess Madeline."

I lifted my chin. " The Court of France are guests in my son's home. They are to become part of my family. Madeline is to be my daughter. And Scotland cannot be known as poor hosts. Will you please speak to the Queen about her behavior towards the other guests?"
